We got started in D&D when Gary Gygax and his wife attended a Michicon convention to peddle the very first edition of D&D rules. The very thin 3 booklet rules were so vague that I had to call Gary for many rule clarifications, and he was very helpful. We also added a lot of material, like the weapon and combat tables, because we weren't too keen on the Chainmail combat rules that D&D was based on.Download the entire document right here and take a look:

I love sharing this with anyone who I think would be interested. I'm happy that this was created by the original writers. I appreciate the insight provided by the former players and it's awesome that you've shared that with us.
I don't mean to gush, but it's such a valuable piece of the hobby's history.
