Ebon Knight #1 (p. 12)

Previous Scene: Page 11

PANEL 1
Ebon Knight struggles to his knees while the broken form of Sylvia lies in a puddle of noxious chemicals. The faintly glowing green liquid burst forth from gigantic glass enclosures that shattered when the ceiling collapsed. Misshapen clumps of biological matter litter the floor.

PANEL 2
Ebon Knight rises from the floor, his armored hand trailing a film of viscous slime. The parts of armor that were in contact with the fluid retain a phosphorescent glow.

EBON KNIGHT: Ehw! Gah!

PANEL 3
Ebon Knight turns sharply as he hears a sickening noise coming from Sylvia.

SOUND EFFECT EFFECT: schlup

SYLVIA: Ngaaaaah

PANEL 4
Ebon Knight has started moving toward Sylvia, who is almost standing. Her soggy blanket has fallen to her waste while drippings of slime strategically cover her exposed breasts.

Sylvia's skin is starting to take on a greenish hue and her eyes are black orbs. Black claws are starting to sprout from her fingers and her wounds have almost entirely healed. There is just a glimpse of shadowy wings unfolding behind her.

EBON KNIGHT: Mother of Go....

SYLVIA/CREATURE: GAHAHAHAHA!

PANEL 5
View from behind over the creature's shoulder towards Ebon Knight. Ebon knight is crouching into a combat stance, his sword brandished and his eyes determined.

The wings and tail of the creature can clearly be seen to connect to a segmented worm-like creature that has attached itself to her spine. The blanket has completely fallen away.

EBON KNIGHT: How many times I gotta fight you? Throw out that demon and we'll pretend none of this ever happened.

PANEL 6
View from below as the frog creature jumps down from above, spear first.

PANEL 7
The Sylvia Creature slaps the Frog Creature aside as he drops. Her barbed tail whips over the ducking Ebon Knight.

SOUND EFFECT: SMACK
FROG CREATURE: Ooph

PANEL 8
Ebon Knight slashes down with his sword along the back of Sylvia's spine, showering himself in black blood. The Sylvia-Creature convulses in pain.

EBON KNIGHT: I'll get that monkey off your back!
SYLVIA/CREATURE: AIEYEAA

NOTES (Mythic conventions detailed here)

CHAOS FACTOR 8

CHARACTER LIST:
1. Thug 1
2. Mugsy
3. Sylvia Franco
4. Mr. Ferrazzo
5. Lead Thug from Flashback
6. Red-headed Thug from Flashback
7. Alien/mutant thug from flashback
8. The Frog Creature
9. Fat Tony
10. 3 Remaining Gangsters that raided the warehouse

THREAD LIST:
1. Discover what's in the box and properly dispose of it
2. Put a stop to Mr. Ferrazzo's criminal activities
3. Resolve the circumstances of the first scene (why Angus and Sylvia would end up fighting in the alley).
4. Meeting at Silver Moon Airships (Flashback)
5. Get help for Sylvia.

STATUS OF SYLVIA: Down to 2 strength and 1 page into her regeneration. This doesn't count any damage she may have sustained in the fall. She'll most likely die if she doesn't get help.

EXPECTED SCENE: The dust clears and Ebon Knight finds himself alone (with an unconscious and dying Sylvia) in an ancient ruin. .

(the scene occurs as expected)

Rather than start with a complex question, I'm going to ask some leading questions given some ideas I had about the setting.

Q: Is the warehouse in a part of town that was settled by Anglo settlers before 1876 (signifying the possibility of a fairly recent ruin) [Unlikely]? Yes.

Q: Is this a bricked up basement [Unlikely]? Yes.

Q: Are there any obvious exits [Unlikely]? No (there goes the notion of a dungeon crawl unless something else turns up).

CQ: What else is initially evident [Mythic Event Meaning]? "Imitate New Ideas"... I interpret that as a mad scientist who was trying to "imitate" evolution through biological experiments.

Q: Is Sylvia lying in a pool of newly spilled chamicals [50/50]? Yes.

PANEL 2
Ebon Knight is in contact with the noxious material.

Q: Any immediate effects [Very Unlikely]? Extreme yes.
Q: Relatively benign, like a persistent glow [Unlikely]? Yes.

RANDOM EVENT: New NPC, "Dominate Opulence". Thr first thin that comes to mind is a piece of biological matter that dominates Sylvia (the wealthier of the two).

PANEL 3
The as-yet-unseen creature telegraphs its appearance with a sound effect and Sylvia (affected in some way) come awake with a start.

PANEL 4
Q: Is Sylvia physically transformed by the creature and/or chemicals [Somewhat likely]? yes.

CQ: What is she transformed into [random image off hard-drive]? A succubus. Interesting...

PANEL 5
View from the other side

PANEL 6
Q: Does Frog Creature show up [50/50]? Yes. It will try to ambush the creature from behind.

ICONS: With a roll of -5 on his dice, I can safely assume the Frog's going to miss his attack. But it will take a couple of panels to play out.

PANEL 7
Continue previous action

PANEL 8
Ebon Knight uses the opening to slash down at the creature on Sylvia's back.

ICONS: He roll +2. Adding his Prowess (6) and Specialty (2), that makes 10. Sylvia's base coordination and prowess are both 4. it is possible the creature adds some to this value, but unlikely.

Q: Does Ebon Knight score a Major Success (meaning he retains a margin of at least 3) [50/50]? yes. He does 5 Stamina damage.

ICONS: What is the new Strength [attribute roll+2]? 5.

Thus, the Sylvia Creature is stunned for a page and can't take any actions.

ICONS: Her new Willpower [attribute roll+2]? 8. That's also how many Stamina points the creature has left.

Risus Tease

S. John Ross, the revered creator of Risus, recently posted submission guidelines for authors wanting to publish official Risus supplements. Since that time, I had been wondering when somebody would take a stab at it.

Well, evidently my waiting is nearing an end. Over at the Risus mailing list, S. John has hinted that at least one author's work has progressed to the playtest stage and that it has him "abuzz", "atwitter", and "vaguely agog". And apparently it involves specific historical costumes for our beloved LCBs (Little Cartoon Bastards - otherwise known as stick figures).

Geomorph #82

Today's geomorph is inspired by a family outing to Perils of the Lost Jungle mini golf. Talk about a sweet time! The whole course has this campy 1930's era adventure theme with a classic pulp hazard at every hole. My boys loved every minute of it, even though they did run rather quickly through the vampire bat cave and did everything they could to avoid the creepy animatronic witch-doctor.

Anyway, I thought it might be cool to feature something similar in a dungeon. The northern entrances to this tile both connect to the southern exits by a chain of 9 or 18 rooms (which are presumably stocked with some low-grade and atmospheric hazard). There are even 10x10 rooms at all four entrances to the "course" for guards or equipment storage.

Posted from my iPhone so I apologize if this doesn't format properly.

Knights of the Astral Sea Session Log #8

Continuing the adventures of Genevieve Lamballe and the crew of Fair Leonore in their quest to find the rightful heir to the Britannic throne. With this report (written by James DiBenedetto), we are now up-to-date on the events of the campaign leading into next Saturday's session.

4 October 1938(?)

Capt. Alastair Hawkesworth
HMAS Richard Lemon Lander

My Dearest Alastair,

Although we have been speaking regularly, still I find it a comfort to put pen to paper and to relate in full detail the events I have seen and participated in.  I will admit to some question as to the correct date in the calendar of our lost homeworld, but it has been approximately seventeen days in my time since I last wrote you, and thus have I dated this missive.

When last I wrote, as you know, I had been prepared to set off with my companions to seek out our lost Queen, Artoria.  But it was decided that, able though Lord Tybalt is, a firmer – and more humanoid – hand at the helm of the Autumn Court would b desirable, and so I remained behind.

I had hoped to use the “seeing stone” to track the progress of my companions and to assist them by providing intelligence along their path.  However, for the first few days, this was not to be; I was unable to properly “tune” the stone.  Operation of this device is, sadly, more art than science at times.  I therefore busied myself with the maintenance of my realm.  I took a direct hand in the continued training of our Singes Avion and, I say with all due modesty, made significant progress with them.  I also, in the interest of maintaining morale within the castle, held a feast followed by entertainment.

I am very sorry, Alastair, that you were not present for this occasion, as I myself provided the entertainment.  I stood up from my throne and performed for my subjects selections from my mother’s favorite role, her rendition of Mimi in La Boheme (left to myself, I rather would have chosen Lucia, but I thought that the Mad Scene might not be the best image to present to my subjects).  I last saw her sing it at Covent Garden, which I am sure you have visited yourself in our past life on your own homeworld.  My subjects were stunned and speechless at my performance, although they did applaud most politely when I was finished.  Perhaps they were not prepared for grand opera, or perhaps it is possible that I need more practice.

After several days, I was finally able to use the seeing stone to find my companions, and I discovered them having just emerged from battle, scarred and tired, in the depths of a dungeon.  I spoke to them, used the stone to scout ahead and find the clearest path for them to emerge to the surface, and then contacted Jude, along with a woman, Svetlana, who had provided our group with a hot air balloon for transport.  Jude and Svetlana were preparing the balloon for launch when I spied several shapes in gray cloaks approaching.  This was a matter of great concern, and became more so when Jude and Svetlana slumped unconscious.

I realized action was required.  I considered my options, and it occurred to me that, if the seeing stone transmits energy (both visible light and sound waves), it could also transmit the energy of my Taschenprojektor Elektroturmgeschütz.  I quickly aligned the weapon with the stone, manipulated the energy fields surrounding the stone in what I hoped was the correct pattern, crossed my fingers and fired.  Somewhat to my surprise, it worked perfectly; a bolt of energy flashed down from the sky, striking the lead cloaked figure.  I shouted to the rest through the stone to leave immediately or face death hurled down from the sky, and in an instant they vanished, save for the figure I hit, who stumbled towards the entrance to the dungeons – from which my companions were just emerging.  Elspeth, rising out of the opening, shot the figure, and he fell unconscious.

As our group got into the balloon, taking the cloaked figure as a prisoner, we saw that he was, in fact, Lord Rakat, clearly seeking to take Artoria and to kill my companions.  Thankfully, he had not killed Jude or Svetlana, but rendered them unconscious using elfshot.  We determined that, in time, they would awaken, and such awakening might be hastened upon their return to the Autumn Court.

Unfortunately, another problem immediately presented itself.  Using the stone, I saw a shimmering cloud approaching the balloon at high speed.  I immediately informed my companions, and told them they had only a few seconds in which to escape.  One of them – someone I had not previously noticed, a new face – acted, calling up a windstorm around the balloon to protect it from the attacking cloud.  As the cloud impacted the whirlwind around the balloon, fire raged all around, causing great mental trauma to poor Dr. Oceana, whose aquatic nature is ill-adapted to fire and heat.  The balloon rose amidst a whirling column of flame and drifted off to safety.

The person who had saved them, it transpired, was a young girl, looking to be no more than ten years old.  But upon speaking to her, the truth was far stranger; although the body I spoke to was a young girl, the mind and soul within it was that of a wizard, one Colonel George Rasmussen.  Colonel Rasmussen had been on his homeworld, in London, in the year 1873, when he had assisted in the performance of an exorcism.  The procedure went badly wrong, and he awoke in another world, another time, and in another body.  I can only imagine how disconcerting such an occurrence must be.  Clearly, he still retains his magical talents, and it was well for my companions that he did.

Once clear of immediate danger, attention turned to the unconscious Lord Rakat.  He was bound (though sadly no iron was easily available, as that would have been the most secure means of keeping a Lord of Faerie).  When he awoke, he was informed (as I had instructed Marcus to tell him) that I had spared his life, and the price for my forbearance had yet to be determined.  He heard those words, and then vanished.

Meanwhile, the balloon finally landed in the town of Greenstone, very near to the border of Faerie.  Immediately it was greeted with all honors, including not only the Mayor of the town, but the adoptive father of Artoria, Lord Stenton.  He was beside himself with relief at the return not only of his daughter but also, as it turned out, his son as well.  He decreed a feast and a celebration to be given that very night, after my companions had had time to rest, bathe and obtain clean clothes.

I decided to make an appearance at the celebration, to join my companions, and to honor Lord Stenton.  I hastily assembled an escort, including two of the Singes Avion whom I had been training, and made my way to Greenstone.  I must admit that I do enjoy the trappings of royalty; it will be sad when I must set them aside.  My presence made quite a stir, as the people of Greenstone have never had a visit from Faerie royalty, and most of their dealings with Faerie have been less than pleasant.

Lord Stenton presented gifts to all my companions, and to myself, which were of great value; upon my return to the Autumn Court, I immediately arranged gifts in kind.  During the party, Lord Rakat made an appearance, and it was made clear to him again that he is in my debt, and I have yet to name my price of him.  I fear that matters with him will be quite unpleasant before they are finally resolved.

Later, I and my companions spoke with Artoria, and discussed with her her destiny as the rightful Queen of the Britannic Empire.  I, and Elspeth, told her of our coming to the Empire, and how we found in it a cause well worth serving.  But it was only when she went alone (I say alone, but she was accompanied by Marcus, who had deemed himself her bodyguard, which we all agreed was quite a good thing) to an altar, where she found herself bathed in blue light and in communion with I know not whom.  But upon her return, she announced that she would return with us, to take her rightful throne.

That led to an unhappy conversation with her adoptive father, who was understandably loath to see her leave, having just been reunited with her.  I suggested that perhaps he, and the entire village of Greenstone (some 200 people in total) might be relocated to Tudor along with Artoria, if they desired.  Artoria considered this, but wished to see conditions on Tudor, via use of the seeing stone, before agreeing to such a plan.  But conditions on Tudor, as you will know, Alastair, from having been in the midst of them, were disastrous.  London was under attack by Spanish forces, and Mr. Kelly of the Royal Society was stirring up trouble with the Regent, Lord Cunningham.

Upon further observation, we determined that Britannic forces would prevail, and so we decided to take our leave of Greenstone and start back towards first the Autumn Court and thence to Tudor.  Lord Tybalt had kept Autumn safe in my absence, and we decided that he should continue to rule there for the time being, while the rest of us returned Artoria to Tudor.  As we never did reach an agreement with Lord Garavon of the Winter Court regarding the disposition of the Autumn throne, it is my opinion that I remain Queen, and that I do not abdicate my throne.  Perhaps, once peace has been restored to Britannia, and the Spanish Empire defeated, and all is well with the worlds, I might return to Autumn and permanently claim my throne there.  Perhaps, should that day ever come, I might have a Royal Consort to sit next to me as I reigned.

But that day is far away, and in the meantime, we had to return to Tudor.  It was three days’ walk on the path out of Faerie, and on the way, Jude (who had awakened upon his return to Autumn), as he did when we first entered Faerie, vanished.  I shudder to think what trouble he will find himself in this time.

We finally emerged in Glastonbury, to find two unwelcome surprises.  First was the season; it had been early fall when we departed, not more than 30 days ago, and now it was the dead of winter, and we realized that nearly six months had passed on Tudor.  Second, the clearing in which Excalibur rested in the stone, to which we planned to immediately take Artoria, was now enclosed within a warehouse belonging to the Britannic Interdimensional Trading Company, an organization that Lord Crabbe in particular has no love for.  Soldiers of the BITC roamed this warehouse, and immediately accosted us.  Lord Crabbe made to distract them while Artoria headed directly for the sword and the stone.  Shots were fired in the air as a warning, but Artoria did not hesitate, reaching the stone and pulling the sword out in one glorious motion.  The BITC soldiers were stunned, and quickly fell to their knees in the presence of their rightful ruler, as did we all.

But, as you well know, Alastair, matters were not that simple.  One of the BITC officers informed us that Lord Cunningham, with the advice of Mr. Kelly,  had declared himself King, and Tudor was in the midst of a civil war.  We encountered Mr. Crowley of the Royal Society, currently in hiding, who gave us additional information on the current situation.  He suggested we take Artoria to Cornwall as a first step in seeing her installed as Queen, and Lord Cunningham routed out, but he had no suggestion as to how we would get her – or ourselves – there.  I used the seeing stone (Mr. Crowley was most covetous of the stone, but it was a gift to myself, and in my keeping shall it remain) to locate Lord Crabbe’s airship, and saw a most unhappy sight – the Fair Lenore sat in a hangar, repainted in the colors of the BITC.  An overland journey seemed out of the question, and I decided upon the best choice – and this is the moment at which I contacted you, my dear Alastair.

Even as I write this, I know that the Lander is en route to us, and the time before we meet again may be counted in minutes.  I look greatly forward to our reunion, and to hear the tales of your bravery during the difficult days of the past few months.

As ever, I remain your most devoted and grateful friend,

Genevieve Chantal Therese de Lisieux Lamballe, la Reine du la Cour d’Automne

Ebon Knight #1 (p. 11)

Previous Scene: Page 10

PANEL 1
Four large gangsters come charging into the room with Tommy guns blasting. Thug #1 (from the first pages of the issue) remains at the doorway looking smug.

SOUND EFFECT: RATATATATATATATATAT
PANEL 2
Ebon Knight dives to shield Sylvia from the gunfire. He fails to protect her, however, as she takes a couple of bullets in her arm and leg.

The Frog Creature is jumping out of frame and is only partially visible.

SOUND EFFECT: RATATATATAT
PANEL 3
View from above as the Frog Creature is perched on a stack of crates. He is throwing his spear down towards the gangsters.

Below, Ebon knight can now be seen protecting Sylvia from the gunfire as bullets ricochet off his armor.

FROG CREATURE: Hngh
SOUND EFFECT: ratatatat
SOUND EFFECT: pling pling
PANEL 4
The lead gangster takes a spear in his shoulder and spins under the impact. Off balance, his Tommy gun sprays a burst of bullets towards the ceiling.

LEAD GANGSTER: Aiehh!

SOUND EFFECT: RATATATATAT
PANEL 5
View of the Frog Creature's eyes going wide as he sees bullets sever the ropes holding a large stone artifact. The artifact looks like a cross between an totem pole and Greek column. It starts to topple downward.
PANEL 6
The stone artifact hits the floor between Ebon Knight and the gangsters and keeps going. Ebon Knight (holding Sylvia) tries to escape but the ground is giving out under him.

SOUND EFFECT: CRASH
PANEL 7
Ebon Knight and Sylvia crash into a rubble-filled room. Dust and falling debris obscure the contents.

SOUND EFFECTS: (lots of sounds signifying falling debris)

NOTES (Mythic conventions detailed here)

CHAOS FACTOR 9

CHARACTER LIST:
1. Thug 1
2. Mugsy
3. Sylvia Franco
4. Mr. Ferrazzo
5. Lead Thug from Flashback
6. Red-headed Thug from Flashback
7. Alien/mutant thug from flashback
8. The Frog Creature
9. Fat Tony

THREAD LIST:
1. Discover what's in the box and properly dispose of it
2. Put a stop to Mr. Ferrazzo's criminal activities
3. Resolve the circumstances of the first scene (why Angus and Sylvia would end up fighting in the alley).
4. Meeting at Silver Moon Airships (Flashback)

EXPECTED SCENE: Fat Tony's thugs arrive on the scene and a fight ensues. I expect that the thugs are the three that were encountered in the Flashback.

ALTERED SCENE: The flashback thugs do not appear (and will presumably appear later).

Q: Do at least three stereotypical thugs show up expecting to encounter Mugsy and his partner [50/50]? Yes. A pretty good roll, so I'll make it four thugs (standard ICONS stats). At this point, it doesn't matter if they were coming to help Mugsy and his partner or ambush them.

Q: Are the thugs armed with Tommy guns [50/50]? Yes.

RANDOM EVENT: NPC Action (Thug 1) "Gratify Tension". Ok, Thug #1 clearly had help nearby and brought it back with him to the scene of the crime.

Q: Does Thug #1 hang back as the muscle takes care of things [50/50]? Yes. And I'll increase the muscle's strength scores by 1.

PANEL 2
ICONS: We have a combat. The four Thugs are described on p. 118 of Icons but have STR of 4. To distinguish them from Thug #1, we'll call them GANGSTERS.

Q: Do all four gangsters target Ebon Knight, Frog Creature, and Sylvia with an area-of-effect blast [50/50]? Yes, I'll combine their effects as well.

Ebon Knight will choose an Interpose maneuver to shield the presumably vulnerable Sylvia from gunfire. He fails to do so and loses his attack as a result.

Q: Does the Frog Creature have at least Coordination 3 [Likely]? Yes (could be higher). And I'll rule that he definitely has the Jumping power.

NOTE: I'm going to roll dice for actions that don't involve Ebon Knight, just to get some uncertainty in the results.

The Gangsters have a Coordination of 2. They miss as the Frog Creature jumps to cover.

Against Sylvia, they all hit with a major success (adding two to their attack for Sylvia being unaware and immobile). Given that they are spreading their fire, their base damage is 3. Accounting for the fact that they are combining their attack, they do 6 points of damage.

The result is that Sylvia's dying again and will start losing Strength this turn.

Against Ebon Knight, the Gangsters miss (Ebon Knight rolled really well).

PANEL 3
It's the Frog Creature's move.

Q: Does he throw his spear from above [Unlikely given that it is his only weapon]? Yes, he chooses the lead Gangster.

ICONS: Randomly determine Frog Creature's Coordination (minimum 3): 4!
Q: Does he have a Spear specialty [Likely]? Yes (Random Event - see below)

Rolling his Coordination (4+1 for specialty) vs the Gangster (2) yields a massive success with a killing weapon. The thug made his strength check and as a result is *only* unconscious.

I'll assume that Ebon Knight is now taking fire (color only, as it's not his or Sylvia's or the heavies' panels).

RANDOM EVENT: Move Away from Thread (Properly Dispose of the Device), "Betray Path". This is tricky, because there are few ways to move away from this thread. One thing that comes to mind is to bring in additional complications here in the warehouse. "Betray Path" makes me think that the ground that Ebon Knight is on is unstable...or could collapse!

PANEL 4
(working out the consequences of the random event)
A heavy goes does and his Tommy guns shoots in the air.

PANEL 5
(working out the consequences of the random event)
The Frog Creature sees the stray bullets sever the ropes holding some heavy items suspended from the ceiling.

CQ: What is suspended [Wikipedia]? 143rd meridian...something Alaskan (but something that would be in a Blue Horizon's warehouse)? A totem pole? Not exactly appropriate to the local Native societies, but it doesn't have to be Pacific Northwest in character.

PANEL 6
(working out the consequences of the random event)
The artifact his the floor.

PANEL 7
(working out the consequences of the random event)
Sylvia (who's gotta be close to death's door) and Ebon Knight are now in a subterranean room. The dtails will be revealed in the next panel.

Geomorph #81

I still hope to start a series of urban geomorphs at some point but I keep waffling on which approach to use. In the meantime, here's another geomorph from the underground city that I mentioned in Geomorph #77 (compatible with my current set).

Ebon Knight #1 (p. 10)

Previous Scene: Page 9

PANEL 1
Shot of Sylvia bleeding out on the snow with the open doorway to the warehouse just visible.

EBON KNIGHT (not shown): Think, Angus!

PANEL 2
Angus is rushing Sylvia into the Warehouse, her blood dripping onto the alley snow.

EBON KNIGHT: Don't die on me, girl!

PANEL 3
Sylvia's prone form is barely visible as Ebon Knight is tearing through various crates and boxes.

EBON KNIGHT: Gotta have something I can use for bandages.

PANEL 4
Ebon Knight is running back to Sylvia with a handful of blankets. He's startled to see a frog-like creature dressed in furs kneeling down over Sylvia and applying some kind of poultice to her neck.

EBON KNIGHT: What the hell are you?

FROG CREATURE: I'm your best hope of keeping the She Wolf alive. Hurry on over with those blankets. This poultice should accelerate her natural healing powers.

PANEL 5
Sylvia is now covered in blankets and wears a blood-soaked neck bandage. The Frog Creature (carrying a short spear in one hand) and Ebon Knight (still wearing his helmet to protect his identity) stare at each other across her body.

EBON KNIGHT: Look, I didn't know... that it... she was human. I didn't know it was her!

FROG CREATURE: Obviously. Sylvia insisted on conducting the ambush in wolf form. She was hoping to scare away the muscle without causing any more bloodshed.

PANEL 6
Close-up of Ebon Knight, head down and looking over Sylvia's falling form.

EBON KNIGHT: But she didn't expect an armored vigilante to charge in and bust up her operation.

PANEL 7
Overhead shot of Sylvia as the Frog Creature and Ebon Knight work to get her into her clothes.

FROG CREATURE: No, she didn't. I was supposed to be watching the perimeter, but you blew right past me on your motorcycle.

EBON KNIGHT: And I suspect that she didn't want to be recognized, either. Couldn't have Fat Tony learn she's stabbing him the back.

PANEL 8
Close up of the Frog Creature, looking surprised and amused.

FROG CREATURE: You know about that? But yes, Sylvia wasn't about to squander the trust that she has cultivated with various criminal gangs these past few months.

PANEL 9
View of Ebon Knight looking over Sylvia and the Frog Creature towards the door (which is not seen).

EBON KNIGHT: Speaking of criminal gangs...

NOTES (Mythic conventions detailed here)

CHAOS FACTOR 8

CHARACTER LIST:
1. Thug 1
2. Mugsy
3. Sylvia Franco
4. Mr. Ferrazzo
5. Lead Thug from Flashback
6. Red-headed Thug from Flashback
7. Alien/mutant thug from flashback
8. Other

THREAD LIST:
1. Discover what's in the box and properly dispose of it
2. Get medical help for Sylvia
3. Put a stop to Mr. Ferrazzo's criminal activities
4. Resolve the circumstances of the first scene (why Angus and Sylvia would end up fighting in the alley).
5. Meeting at Silver Moon Airships

EXPECTED SCENE: Another NPC ("Kill Status Quo") as the action returns to the present. I suspect that this individual will be encountered while Ebon Knight is trying to get medical attention for Sylvia.

(The Scene occurs as expected)

ICONS: How is Sylvia doing? She'll start losing Strength this page(I'm not counting flashback pages). Of course, she's naked in the freezing cold and has a gaping wound in her neck. Things can't be good.

PANEL 1
Angus considers his options.

Q: Any obvious materials that can be used to bind Sylvia's wound [Very Unlikely]? Yes. It could be something in the pile of trash, but it could also be something in the warehouse. Ah, could be a first aid kit in the warehouse...

PANELS 2 & 3
Angus getting Sylvia out of the snow while he looks for a blanket and some bandages.

PANEL 4
Q: Does the new NPC enter the warehouse carrying Sylvia's clothes [50/50... seemingly high chance but it feels right and the new NPC needs to be introduced]? Yes.

"Kill Status Quo" implies an anarchist, a revolutionary, or activist perhaps.

CQ: Who is it [TV TROPES]? Fluble. Anthropomorphic frog with conspiracy theories? Weird. But not impossible to justify given Sylvia and Hinkley's adventures in the Lair of the Frog King.

Q: Is it the Frog Princess from that story [Very Unlikely]? No. It will be a male frog, possibly the Frog Princess/Queen's son.

The frog creature performs first aid on Sylvia (perhaps assisted by a little shamanic magic) and replies to Angus.

ICONS: Sylvia will not lose any Strength this turn and she will stabilize.

PANEL 5
Sylvia's now covered in blankets with a neck bandage.

Q: Does the Frog Creature volunteer any information  [50/50]? Extreme yes. Wow, that means he doesn't think Ebon Knight is a threat.

Q: Is he Sylvia's partner (at least in this endeavor) [50/50]? Extreme yes... perhaps a loyal companion. Note that Angus has never seen him before (which has implications for flashbacks).

Q: Was he dealing with the mob lookouts when Sylvia ambushed Mugsy and his friend [Likely]? yes. And he probably came running as soon as Angus roared in on his motorcycle.

PANEL 6
Conversation continues.

PANEL 7
Conversation continues as Sylvia gets dressed.

CQ: Who is she nominally working for [Wikipedia]? Essex County Park System, New Jersey... I think of New Jersey and I think of mafia. Definitely a rival crime family. Getting another random mafia name from Wikipedia... "Fat Tony" Giacalone.

PANEL 8
Continue the conversation (where the Frog admits that Sylvia has been infiltrating various gangs).

PANEL 9
Q: Segue into criminals arriving in the warehouse? Extreme yes.

UNRESOLVED QUESTIONS:
- How did Ebon Knight hear of the theft?
- What's the nature of the stolen "device"?
- Angus knows something of its nature... how?
- What's the next step in recovering the device?
- Does Sylvia have a car near by?
- Which mafia boss did those three thugs that appeared in the flashback work for? Fat Tony or Mr. Ferrazzo? Sylvia could be playing both sides.

Geomorph #80

Today's geomorph consists of a series of caverns sporting subterranean trees or gigantic bushes. Perhaps they are nurtured by phosphorescent cave flora. Or maybe the trees grow with the power of magic alone. Or maybe this tile simply represents a deep canyon, open to the surface sky.

Knights of the Astral Sea Session Log #7

Continuing the adventures of Genevieve Lamballe and the crew of Fair Leonore in their quest to find the rightful heir to the Britannic throne (picking up with Log #7 since Log #6 was posted last February)...

18 September 1938

Capt. Alastair Hawkesworth
Drake House, London, Tudor

My Dearest Alastair,

You will, I hope, forgive me for dispensing with formality and addressing you as I have.  In truth, I believe it is well past time to have done so.  You may, of course, still call me Sa Majeste Genevieve, if you wish, although I will not insist on it.

As I put pen to paper, I remain Queen of the Autumn Court of Faerie.  What’s more, I have had to act in that capacity, as I will describe below.  Much has occurred in the past few days.  Myself and my companions took up residence in the castle of the Autumn Court, and began to take stock both of our situation and of the realm which we now ruled.  Lord Crabbe, our Commandant du L’armee de l’air et le General du les Singes Avion, took it upon himself to begin intensive training of said Singes Avion (Flying Monkeys; it sounds far more dignified in French).  The training has not, to date, gone as well as might be hoped.  In fact, the one word I would use to describe the results of Lord Crabbe’s efforts, and I think he would agree, is merde.

As for myself, I visited the dungeons; the Autumn Witch had several dozen people imprisoned, and I desired to free any who did not deserve such punishment.  The majority of the prisoners, it transpired, were deserving of freedom, and, being a compassionate monarch, I did so.  This being Faerie, I exacted a promise from all those I freed; I required from them that they would not take up arms, or otherwise plot against the Autumn Court or myself personally.  All agreed, and were set off on their way.  I then went in search of magical items that might be of use to our currently lost companion, Jude the mage, and I found several spellbooks which I shall present to him if and when he reappears.  I also searched for any technological items, and found an alchemical laboratory.  This I explored in detail, with the assistance (if that is the proper word) of several Singes Avion.  It was demonstrated again, as I have said before, that the face of science is not always pretty; one of the test subjects drank a vial full of a substance that turned it immediately into gold.  We are now in possession of a monkey made entirely of gold; it weighs approximately one ton.

After that unfortunate incident, I was returning to my rooms when I heard a commotion.  Elspeth, who had been exploring the lands surrounding the castle, had discovered an intruder, armed with a crossbow and lurking in wait to, I presume, assassinate me.  She battled the intruder, but he was as skilled with a blade as she, and wounded her severely.  He then leaped to a chandelier and attempted to escape.  However, by this time, I was close enough to see the intruder, and to take aim with my weapon.  I fired at the lowest setting, in hopes of merely wounding him so that he might be interrogated, but, sadly, after he was hit, he fell to his death.  We were able to determine that he hailed from the Spring Court and thus was dispatched by one Lord Uldis, who apparently has a minor claim on the Autumn throne.

My desire was to call for immediate retaliation.  I had visions of dispatching a squadron of Singes Avion to exact vengeance for this attack upon not only my person but my realm, but events, specifically the arrival of a delegation from the Winter Court, prevented any action from being taken.  It is perhaps just as well; I fear that our flying simians would have proven ineffective at best.

Among the visitors from the Winter Court was one of our lost companions, Marcus.  We were all most pleased to see him, and more importantly, to see him in one piece.  He told us of his experiences; he took a wrong step on our path into Faerie and found himself…elsewhere.  He encountered a company of Red Caps who were, it seems, seeking to curry favor with the Spring Court by killing me; he did battle with them and emerged victorious.  He then delved into a cave system and discovered murals which depicted, as he related to us, his father (or at least a man very like his father) in the midst of slaying a dragon.  Upon emerging from the caves, he happened upon the Winter delegation, and made his way here with them.  I bestowed upon him a title and position: Marcus is our Conseiller Special du Affaires Militaire.  It is, I think, a very apt title and role for him.

As for the remainder of the Winter delegation, there were two men of note: Lord Tinucal, the leader of the delegation, and Lord Rakat, who bore a disturbing resemblance to the would-be assassin I described earlier.Lord Rakat took an immediate interest in Elspeth, and she likewise in him, while Lord Tinucal expressed the desire of his liege, Lord Garavan, King of the Winter Court, to reach an agreement that would turn the throne of Autumn over to his daughter.

Lord Tinucal presented a gift to the court, and, he said, to me personally; a “seeing stone”.  He expressed a wish to commence negotiations, once he and his fellows had been suitably fed and entertained.  Therefore, it fell to us to put on a royal dinner.  I sought out the steward of the castle and instructed him to begin preparations for the feast; I impressed upon him the importance of the occasion, and the necessity of ensuring that myself and the Autumn Court generally were not embarrassed in any way.

Perhaps surprisingly, the feast was a success, with one exception.  It seems that our guests, among the gifts they brought, included some food that had been drugged, and Elspeth was unlucky enough to eat some.  Showing effects as though she were intoxicated, Lord Rakat escorted her out of the hall, and, as Elspeth related to us later, back to her rooms, where he questioned her.  She was understandably furious, as were we all.

Before learning of Elspeth’s drugging, however, Lord Tinucal suggested that, owing to the delicacy of the issues to be negotiated with the Winter Court, and the benefit of face-to-face talks, that I journey to Winter and speak with Lord Garavon in person.  I did not wish to do this for two reasons.  The first, which I explained to Tinucal, was that, with the precarious state of the Autumn Court, I did not wish to leave it, only to return and perhaps discover that the realm had fallen in the absence of myself and my friends.   The second reason, which I did not say aloud, was that I had no wish to venture onto potentially hostile grounds for such a negotiation.  Tinucal claimed to understand my reluctance to leave Autumn, and offered to use the Seeing Stone so I could speak directly to Lord Garavon.  I agreed to this, and then withdrew to discuss matters with my companions.

Lord Crabbe opined that perhaps the Seeing Stone had functions beyond those described by Tinucal; that it was possible that the Stone might in fact transport me directly to Winter, where I would then be a prisoner of Lord Garavon.  Soon after, we leadned of Elspeth’s encounter with Lord Rakat; this was clearly a hostile act on the part of the Winter Court, and a message was sent to Tinucal expressing our displeasure.

I then took the Seeing Stone to the alchemical laboratory, and, with the aid of one of the Singes Avion as an experimental subject, as well as various tools and devices  from my personal equipment, I began to investigate the Stone.  I determined that it would most likely not teleport me away, and after bombarding it with x-rays while projecting an etheric field generated by a Tesla coil, I observed energy patterns surrounding the Stone, which I could manipulate using my hands to activate and control the Stone.  I wonder if, perhaps, when we find Jude, he will allow me to bombard him with x-rays and etheric fields as well.  I would be very curious as to the results!

This I did, and the Stone came to life, showing me a scene with two men in argument.  One was Lord Garavon, and the other was a member of the Royal Society, one Mister Kelly.  Mister Kelly was attempting to convince Garavon to kill Artoria, and thus deprive us of our rightful Britannic Queen.  I listened for a few moments, and then announced my presence by shouting at Lord Garavon.  He took immediate notice of me and addressed me.

I will say here that I was well-served by my training, and I kept in mind as well, Alastair, your advice, that a quick decision, even if it is wrong, is generally better than a slow decision, even if it is correct.  With that in mind, I acted.  Lord Garavon expressed his desire that Artoria not return to our world, as well as implying that the Autumn throne which we were offering to him in trade might be taken from us by force.  I replied that it was certainly possible, but that I could equally well abdicate my throne in favor of a candidate not to his liking, and one who might well defend the realm successfully.  I also reminded him that any effort to seize the Autumn throne might be very costly; after all, I said, the Autumn Witch was killed, and another Lord of Faerie could meet a similar fate if combat were to occur.  This was, perhaps, a hollow threat, as the Autumn Witch was only killed by accident, but I put on as brave and resolute a face as I could, and it seemed to work.  At any rate, Lord Garavon and I agreed to work together as far as finding Artoria, whose whereabouts are unknown.  He put Lord Rakat at our disposal until such time as Artoria is found.

I shared the results of my negotiation with my companions, and then we tried to imagine a next step in finding Artoria.  It was suggested that I use the Seeing Stone to try and locate her.  If Jude were here, he would have made the attempt, but in the absence of magic, Science must rule the day, and so I set out to try and find our Queen.

Lo and behold, after much effort, I did find her.  The Stone showed us a long, difficult path that sped by, finally ending up in what appeared to be Earth; or at least one of the many Earths, and specifically New Zealand.  Artoria was armored, and surrounded by armored men and woman, and was descending into forbidding-looking caves.

Using the Stone, I attempted to discover which world this actually was; but all we could see was ruined, burned out cities.  London was a wasteland, but a fantastical wasteland, with mile-high towers amidst brining rubble.  Other major cities appeared the same.  Lord Crabbe did not recognize this world from any of his travels; but he did suggest another alternative; he told me to try and focus on Mars or Venus and see if the location could be discerned from the Planetary Paths.  But here my mastery of the Stone failed, and I was unable to do so.  I think it was only luck that I did not damage the stone in my failure.

We discussed what we had seen, and one detail stood out; the path that led to Artoria began here, in Faerie, and led to a jade green bridge.  None in the castle knew of such a place, but Lord Rakat did.  He explained that his mother had knowledge of the bridge, and using the Stone, we contacted her.  After some difficulty, she told us how to find the bridge, and we determined to set off in search of Artoria.  Lord Rakat will accompany us, but unfortunately, during his questioning of Elspeth, he discovered that we – well, I, to be specific about it – was responsible for the death of the assassin, who, it transpires, was his brother.  As you would imagine, he swore vengeance once our mission is complete.

But that is a matter for later.  For now, we are preparing to set off for the bridge, and then onward after Artoria.  We will leave Lord Tybalt in charge of the castle and the Autumn Court; I am hopeful that he will preserve my kingdom in good order.  And I will keep you in my thoughts, Alastair, and hope and pray that you are and will remain well.  I look forward to seeing you again

Until that happy day, I remain  your Queen, and your friend,

Genevieve Chantal Therese de Lisieux Lamballe, la Reine du la Cour d’Automne
