I'm glad someone finally posted that erol otus cover art, because that's my iconic image as well.

I think the first one was before my time, I never really got into D&D until I received a Red Box as a gift.

Moldvay/Cook all the way!

What's the third picture?

I received the Moldvay Red Box as a gift when I was in 6th grade. Even though I quickly moved on to AD&D, it will forever define a certain way that I percieve the game. In a way, it comes down to the artists. Erol Otus and Dave Trampier define D&D for me in two distinct modes. Otus was Moldvay/Cook and Tramp was AD&D.

I think I'd have to say the PHB is tops for me, but your other choices are great.

I also started with the boxed set of Dungeons & Dragons, which I got for Christmas in 1982 (high school for me). My favorite artists for Dungeons & Dragons, various modules, and Dragon Magazine are Erol Otus, Larry Elmore, Tony DiTerlizzi, and Michael William Kaluta, among others. Wizards of the Coast's recent D&D Essentials boxed set is a good marketing play on nostalgia, even if I think many grognards will stick with Pathfinder or old-school games for now.
