A Short Post About A Long Weekend

This was a long and wonderful weekend spent almost entirely away from my computer. Alas, I did not find the time to continue my Ebon Knight Mythic GME game. Nor did I get the chance to try my hand at beat mapping some of my favorite stories. That being said, it was still a great weekend for gaming.

On Saturday night, we had an amazing session of Knights of the Astral Sea. The party had reached a critical juncture where they would be attempting to install the once and future queen of Britannia in a land town asunder by war and suffering under a despotic pretender. As a result, I had worked a little harder than usual on pre-game preparation (to the point that I was a little stressed out over it). You can imagine my chagrin when I started unpacking my GM bag at the session only to find that I left my notebook at home. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I felt liberated and I had just enough notes (in the form of a about a dozen index cards) that I could comfortable improvise with whatever the players decided to do.

The result: a rip-roaring session in which the party's long-absent mage escaped the romantic advances of a matronly conspirator, even though it almost opened the door to Lovecraftian entities from outside reality to do it. I really hope Jim writes up the session as another one of Genevieve's letters, as it is sure to be a hoot.

Other bits:

  • DC ADVENTURES Hero's Handbook arrived on Saturday. It's a lovely book that I've really been enjoying. As much as I love it, I have a sinking suspicion that I'll never run it. My tastes have been running to lighter rules systems as of late, and Mutants & Masterminds 3e still feel rather crunchy/fiddly. Then again, I'm also running a Gurps 4e game, so maybe I'll be proven wrong.
  • Speaking of Supers, my oldest son spontaneously invented a new super hero this morning called Eagle Man. At no prompting from his father, he proceeded to tell me of Eagle Man's origin story (bitten by radioactive Eagle, natch); his alternate identify (Alfred Ballew - all his characters are named Alfred these days); his gadgets (Eagle Claws, Eaglemobile, Eagle Watch); and his nemesis (Black Hawk). My youngest chimed in that he wanted to be Eagle Boy and a dynamic duo was born.
  • The wife and I were hiking in in the Shenandoah on this absolutely gorgeous September day. I love the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge and think it would be a great setting for a Dies the Fire-style  game of regressed technology. Driving through the beautiful hills  made me think of castles, fantasy towns, and how bog the land would feel if you couldn't drive it.

Sounds like an awesome weekend, especially the radioactive eagle part!

I'm digging the Kinghts of the Astral posts.

And DC Adventures is a nice looking book isn't it--though I agree a bit about the crunch of M&M.
