...a scrawny youth apprenticed to a hedge wizard. He was deft with the dagger, that one, and had a legend-breaking mind, like mine and my father's.Presumably, this is Mouse (before the events in "The Unholy Grail" and before he becomes Gray Mouser). I must have missed this the last time I read the stories. I always assumed that "Ill Met In Lankhmar" was their first encounter.

I might be mistaken, but I seem to recall that they actually make reference to that particular encounter when they are drinking together that first night in Lankhmar.
Now I need to go pick up my own copy and check :-)
I've never read this series and having just moved and thereby extended my commute by some time I decided taking up digital audiobooks. Having heard about this series from nearly every OSR blog - I decided to start listening to these books. I'm like seventy-five percent of the way through Swords and Deviltry.
Anyway, when Mouse first has his encounter with the dukes men and is beaten severely he recalls running into some red-bearded pirates. Then when they meet in the streets and take on the thieves and bravos they recognize each other from long ago on some beach (I can't remember the name of the beach).
These books are pretty cool so far, I'm going to be ordering the second of the series soon since I am chewing through the first at a rabid pace with my 1.5 hours a day in my car :)
In general, this reread has been really illuminating. All sorts of tidbits that I missed on previous reads. :)
