Beyond Sanctuary: Setting the Scene

This post establishes the initial situation of my Beyond Sanctuary Mythic GME Old School Sandbox game. Before diving into actual play, I rolled "Clearing the Hex" on The Big List of RPG Plots. What follows is an in-game rationalization of this plot as well as additional adventure preparation. For Scene 1 (next post), I will assume that all the characters have met, agreed upon a partnership, equipped themselves, and embarked upon their journey.

SETTING THE SCENE
Wherein Arien assembles a party of adventurers to chart the lands beyond Sanctuary.

Arien Fingalen has recently come into possession of several conflicting maps of the Wild Lands beyond Sanctuary. She knows brothers and sisters among the Crimson Wolves who have ventured beyond that distant town, but none have returned. From her studies among the Sisterhood of the Galenteith, she knows that there used to be Elflands in that direction, perhaps even the mythical Homelands, so she decides to recruit other adventurers to join her in a preliminary expedition to chart the wilderness and hopefully uncover valuable ruins.

Arien signed on as a caravan guard, along with Tenistan Rhial and Liamas Appledore. Also traveling with the caravan were Hal Ptor and Kandara Tanum, who hoped to visit the fabled Abbey of the Storm Father. Finally, the mysterious Valdora Balinsdottir was traveling for her own inscrutable reasons. All five companions readily agreed to join Arien in her quest, after a brief rest in Sanctuary proper.

The caravan arrived in Sanctuary on September 1st [standard dating used for convenience]. The companions purchased rooms at the Silver Wolf, though they were forced to share rooms due to caravan crowds (only Valdora paid for her own room).

Arien immediately set upon acquiring supplies for their mission [see below]. Hal and Kandara both visit the Abbey of the Storm Father, acquiring a supply of excellent food (and beer) for their journey. Tenistan spends much of the week training, but he also purchases supplies. Liamas spends most of the week drinking and gambling but does remember to buy food (he is a halfling, after all). Finally, Valdora spends much of her time reading and soaking in the spa. She goes shopping but was largely already well equipped.

On the morning of the 7th, the party embarks from the North Gate (under the skeptical eyes of the town watch). The expected first scene will occur as the party emerges from the mountain pass into high scrub land. These lands are not unkown and Arien plans to quickly move farther east.
